As a former member of two search and rescue teams, I can put in a few tips for camping and hiking safely.
Having a good first-aid kit well stocked and double checked is a first. Having any medications that you take in stock and plenty of it in case you are delayed from your scheduled return.
Notifying a family member or friend if you plan on a remote beach camping trip.
Give your first location and any secondary ideas posted in a trip plan and leave it with family or friends.
In case you are delayed and have no contact with the outside world via cell phone, then family can come look for you or send a deputy to do a public assist and check on your well-being.
Hiking can present a few hazards to think about. Wearing 2 pairs of socks reduces blisters, along with some foot powder this will help you keep your feet in good shape.
Having blisters makes it hard to walk and some cases easier to stumble on the trail. A fall may follow a stumble and if you are on an edge of a beach cliff, well, you get the picture.
Some folks like a walking stick, it seems to help with balance. Carry a canteen and some edible power snacks ina fanny pack too. Dont forget your meds, compass, whistle and other
small items that wont weight you down. In wet climates like the upper pacific northwest, a poncho in case it decides to downpour will help you retain body heat. If you can obtain a map
of the area you are hiking in, then please carry it in your pack. It doesnt do any good in the car. |
